Nighthawks by: Edward Hopper in 1942

 

Character 1 : Man at the bar alone with back facing the scene: Name: Fred: Fred is a lawyer whose life has been going down hill since 8 a.m. this morning, he lost his job for the law firm her worked for, and once his wife found out she changed the locks and won't let him in their family home for letting her down and not getting any money for the day. He went to go stay with his parents, but they were disgraced that he would allow a women to take control of him over such a large thing. He decided to go to a 24 hour diner to get his thoughts together on what he should do about his relationship and about his job.

 

Character 2: Man next to the women: Name: David : David recently joined the mafia, he had known the head of the mafia for a while because they enjoyed his fathers restaurant, ever since he was a little boy he was treated nicely and with respect and dignity by them and they became close (his father kind of had to, since they were the mafia) David had to get a new job since his fathers restaurant was ransacked by envious commentators, now he has all that he can ask for, money, women, friends, and family, he couldn't be happier.

 

Character 3: Women next to David: Name: Shirley: Shirley is a young women who has been disowned by her family for her questionable habits, she met David just 3 days earlier and they really hit it off, she has remained loyal to him so far and appreciates all that he has done for her. She is showered with gifts, and he is always complementing her appearance, when she first met him she was scared of displeasing him because he told her about him being in the mafia, but after she thought about it she likes the sense of danger.

 

Character 4: Bartender: Name: John: John is a well respected man, he works hard and goes  out of his way to help those in need. He has been working odd jobs his entire life until 3 weeks ago when he finally got enough money to open his own diner. Everyone who comes in is greeted with a warm smile and good service, which has now earned him regulars. he usually does not get anyone past 11 but is always up in case he does. He will talk with anyone to help them out.

 

 

Scene 1: It is 11:37 p.m. and most of the city is in there homes sleeping. Police sirens are heard in the distance, it is a cold night.

 

Fred: Ill take another one bar keep! You want anything else Baby?

Shirley: no thank you I'm good I think we should get gong soon it is getting late, I feel like getting into bed and sleeping for a while.

David: At least you have a bed to sleep in, ill have to find a motel or something for tonight, if I can even afford it.

John: I know a few places, around here that may have some vacancies.

David: Ill just look around, I wouldn't want to waste your time

Fred: we have an extra room if ya need a place to stay

Shirley: I hope you don't mind dogs, I have this darling little pug named henry and he love people

David:I better not I feel like I feel like I would be intruding

Fred: "Not at all" takes a drink "just as long as you are on your way before noon"

John: "Its getting to closing time soon and ill have to get home I open at 8 if you would like a good breakfast"

Fred: "you should be careful leaving so late at night, that's when buglers show up, exact thing happened to my dads restaurant."

John: " Most people around here seem to enjoy my company, I think ill be safe"

Fred: "Everyone loved my dad, he made the best turismo in the country, People just want to make more money they won't care about your financial standing"

David: "isn't that the truth" Drinks last of drink

John: "True I guess, when I get enough money I will probably hire people so I can have this place be 24 hours won't have to worry about break-ins then"

Shirley: "Still a chance of being robbed"

John: "Not with my 12 gage" pulls out shotgun " No one will want to mess with me with this around"

Fred: "Impressive, but not as impressive as my AR" Pulls out an AK-47 from in his jacket

John: "woah watch what you bring in here, I could have you arrested"

Shirley: "im not sure the police would be able to do much, at least not with the people Freddy knows"

John: "what's that suppose to mean?"

Fred: "means I can bring what ever I want in here"

David: "That's a cool lookin gun, my wife never let me have guns she thinks they kill people, she doesn't understand that its the person with the gun that kills people"

Shirley: " what if a gun is dropped and shoots someone dead?" "then a gun kills people"

David: "But some one had to load that gun correct? And the person should have had the safety on"

John: "can you please put that gun away?" "I will not hesitate to call the police"

Fred: "If you call the police I will shoot you"

David; looks at Fred and John and Shirley to see what is going on

John : "get  out of my diner right now, you are no longer welcome"

Fred: "You can't make me" holds up AK-47 to John, who in turn raises shotgun"

Shirley: "Lets just GO Freddy, im tired" tries to grab Fred's arm but he moves it out of the way

Fred: "Ill leave when I finish my drink!"

John: " you will leave now or else"

Fred: "Or else what"

John: Stares intensely at Fred "I will defend my property"

David: Grabs Fred "come on bub just go"

Fred: "get your hands off me now"

David : "Not gonna do that" Starts to pull fred twards the door

Fred: breaks free of david and shoots him in the stomach and chest

John: "OH MY GOD YOU KILLED HIM"

Shilrey: Screams

John: Pushes
